A car reported stolen in Bluffton on Friday was later found wrecked on Hilton Head Island, according to a report from the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

A resident of the Estate at Westbury Park said his Ford Mustang was taken Friday without his permission by two men temporarily staying at his apartment. The man said the car was taken while he napped and a note was left on his kitchen countertop that the men would return the car after picking "some money up from my babymomma," the report said.

Authorities found the car abandoned on Dillon Road after it struck a tree; a witness reported seeing the car leave the roadway and two men running from the crashed car, the report said. The car's owner told deputies he received a call from one of the men apologizing for wrecking the car and claiming that another car had run them off the road, which the witness said was untrue, the report said.

An investigation into the crash and alleged theft is ongoing.
