Man accused of burglary at Bluffton pawn shop had swords in his vehicle

A Bluffton man was arrested early Monday morning with swords in his vehicle after an alarm went off at Top Dollar Pawn and Sales in Bluffton.

Adam Carfield, 36, was charged with burglary after a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office deputy was called to the Kitties Landing Road pawn shop around 3:50 a.m. and found it had been broken into.

As the deputy was responding to the call, he noticed a burgundy vehicle traveling on Goethe Road toward Bluffton Parkway. A Bluffton Police Department cruiser was behind the vehicle, so the deputy asked dispatch to notify that police department of the investigation, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office report.

The Bluffton police officer pulled the burgundy vehicle over while the deputy searched the shop with a K-9, the report said.

Inside was Carfield, a number of swords, hand tools, an electric grinder, buckets and several other items, the report said.

At the pawn shop, the dog found nothing in the building, but the deputy noticed a puddle outside the business consistent with one left by a vehicle that could have been parked outside or running shortly before his arrival, the report said.

Video surveillance footage showed a suspect near the business who was similarly built and dressed like Carfield, the report said.

As the deputy reviewed the footage, the police department completed its traffic stop of Carfield and released him, the report said.

Law enforcement later reached him over the phone and met him in a parking lot, where he was arrested and taken to the Beaufort County Detention Center, the report said.

He is being held on a $15,000 bond.
