Bluffton Police Department installs first defibrillator

The Bluffton Police Department installed its first defibrillator, or AED, into a police cruiser Tuesday.

Money to purchase the device was raised through a campaign by the local nonprofit Arrhythmia Alliance.

The campaign was launched earlier this year in response to the death 8-year-old Gavin Quance, who drowned in a Bluffton pool in 2014.

Police officials said at the time that officers may have been able to save his life had they been equipped with AEDs.

Arrhythmia Alliance hopes to raise enough money outfit all of Bluffton's police cruisers with AEDs.

To donate to the campaign, contact the nonprofit at (843) 415-1886 or mail contributions to P.O. Box 5507, Hilton Head, SC 29938.
