Hilton Head High student hospitalized after taking drug at game, fainting

A Hilton Head High School student was hospitalized Friday night after taking a drug found in cough syrup while attending the school's football game, according to a report from the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

The girl, a juvenile whose name and age were redacted from the report, fainted after returning home from the game and was taken to Hilton Head Hospital, the report said. A friend of the girl admitted to authorities they had smoked marijuana before going to the Hilton Head High-Bluffton High School football game and taken a drug called "ccc," a street name for Dextromethorphan, while there.

The girl took four "ccc" pills and her friend took three, the report said. Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant found in over-the-counter cough medicines.

After returning home from the football game, the girl fainted in the bathroom and was taken by ambulance to the hospital. She told authorities the pills were provided by a friend, the report said.

Investigators tried to locate the people who sold marijuana to the girls and those who provided them with the pills, but had not succeeded at the time the report was filed, it said.
