Salvation Army seeks clothing donations following fire; investigation continues
The Salvation Army is asking the community for donations in the wake of a fire that heavily damaged the group's Hilton Head Island location Sept. 6.
Though the store has insurance, it will not cover the loss of $70,000 in donations that was inside of the building when it caught on fire, Amber Hewitt, director of operations for the Salvation Army in Beaufort County, said Friday.
The store is not operating, but the need for assistance to families in the Bluffton and Hilton Head areas remain, Hewitt said.
The Salvation Army is instead working out of the Beaufort Family Store and needs clothing donations.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office, Capt. Randy Hunter of the Bluffton Township Fire District said Friday.
Anyone who would like to donate items can call 843-524-5206 to schedule a pick up. Items can also be dropped off at in Bluffton at 1316 Fording Island Road or in Beaufort at 164 Robert Smalls Parkway.
Gently used items in good working condition will be accepted, Hewitt said.
