After Bluffton smoke shop break-in, police search for burglar with ‘unique gait’

Beaufort County deputies are asking the public to help identify a burglar with a “unique gait” who broke into a Bluffton smoke shop last week and filled a duffel bag with stolen merchandise.

The burglary at Smoke City, at 48 Burnt Church Road, happened just after 4 a.m. on June 21. and was caught on surveillance video, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

A camera inside the store captured the burglar smashing the front glass door and ducking inside before grabbing about 20 jars from the counter and more products from a display case.

Police pointed out one aspect of the video that stands out: the burglar’s distinctive walk as he lugs the duffel bag out of the store.

“The suspect’s left knee appears to cave inward with each step, a characteristic that could help someone recognize him,” the sheriff’s office wrote on social media.

In their request for information, deputies noted the burglar carried a dark-colored duffel bag and was wearing a gray hoodie, a black face covering, dark gray pants, black shoes and gloves.

Anyone with information about this burglary is encouraged to contact Sgt. Calore of the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office at 843-255-3411. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through the Crime Stoppers of Beaufort County website, the P3 Tips app or by calling 844-847-7238 (844-TIPS-BFT).
