Arrests made in fatal Port Royal shooting. What we know
The Port Royal Police Department has arrested three suspects related to a May 15 fatal shooting at the Shell Pointe Apartments, according to a June 10 press release.
Two suspects, Naim Malik Riley and Damon Terrell Gwathney Jr., were arrested June 6 in Florida. The third, Derrick Bernard Riley, was arrested June 9 in North Carolina, police said. All three are charged with murder, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, attempted armed robbery and aggravated breach of peace.
According to the release, officers located the victim upon arrival at the scene May 15. The victim was later pronounced deceased at Beaufort Memorial Hospital.
A subsequent investigation revealed that the suspects approached a group of individuals at the apartments and began assaulting one of them. The victim intervened to defend the attacked individual, and during this altercation was shot by the suspects. The victim then attempted to flee, and the suspects continued shooting at him.
