An investigation is underway after a property owner reported what appeared to be human remains Saturday evening, according to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office.

Police say a property owner discovered the remains while conducting a controlled brush fire on their land, located between Cooswhatchie and Yemassee. The property is in the Gilmania Road area off W. Frontage Road, a side road parallel to Interstate 95.

Deputies and investigators were first on the scene Saturday evening to process the area. Initial observations from police indicate the remains may have “been there for some time.” They returned Sunday and recovered “additional material from the site that will be submitted for testing to assist with identification,” according to an update from the agency on social media.

The investigation remain ongoing as of Sunday afternoon.
