A 46-year-old Bluffton man will face prison time after a jury convicted him of distributing fentanyl in a drug sale to an informant on Hilton Head Island, according to a release from the 14th Circuit Solicitor’s Office.

Danardis Quaviel Mitchell was sentenced to 12 years in prison on Wednesday. He was booked into the Beaufort County Detention Center on Tuesday evening.

The conviction came more than five years after a controlled drug purchase near Hilton Head Christian Academy, where an informant working with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office made a $300 drug purchase from Mitchell.

The informant entered Mitchell’s vehicle, located in the parking lot of a shopping center on Hilton Head’s Mathews Drive, and exchanged the cash for a white powder sold as heroin. Analysts in the sheriff’s office laboratory determined the sold substance was actually fentanyl.

Prosecutors said Mitchell had a 20-year criminal history, including convictions for conspiracy, possession with intent to distribute crack, possession with intent to distribute cocaine and three instances of driving under suspension.
