Police seek DNA evidence after computer reported stolen from Bluffton apartment

Police are awaiting possible DNA evidence after a man’s computer and other electronics were reported stolen from his Bluffton-area apartment last week, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

Beaufort County deputies responded the morning of Jan. 22 to the Emerson Isles apartments, located off Simmonsville Road in the Bluffton area. A resident told police his computer, keyboard, mouse and game controller had gone missing from his apartment, according to a sheriff’s office incident report.

The man was alerted to the possible burglary after a maintenance employee at the apartment complex, who had received a work order for the unit, found the front door “wide open” the previous morning, the report says. Before then, the employee told police, he had heard noises coming from the apartment and saw a man with a carry-on suitcase walking away from the unit.

Looking for trace DNA, deputies took swabs of the assortment of cables that had been unplugged from the missing computer. They also confirmed with apartment management that the unit’s locks had been changed when the resident moved in about seven months prior.

Police had not publicly identified any suspects or made an arrest as of Wednesday morning.
