18 year old arrested in connection to north Beaufort stabbing

An 18-year-old man was arrested in connection to a stabbing Monday afternoon in Burton, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

Just before 1 p.m. Monday, deputies responded to a group of homes in the Noye Wiggins Dr. area just north of Battery Creek High School for a reported stabbing. Deputies said they found a 16-year-old with stab wounds at the scene, as well as the suspect — identified as Angel Avila-Castro — and several witnesses .

Avila-Castro allegedly stabbed the victim with a utility knife during a fight between family members, according to the sheriff’s office.

The victim was transported by EMS for medical treatment. The extent of the victim’s injuries was unknown as of 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Avila-Castro was arrested and charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon while committing a violent crime. He’s being held at the Beaufort County Detention Center.

Under South Carolina law, attempted murder is a felony punishable by up to 30 years in prison.
