Hardeeville man killed in ATV crash near GA border, officials say

A Hardeeville man was killed in an ATV accident Sunday near Jasper County’s border with Georgia, according to authorities.

Clarence J. Washington, 44, was treated on scene and taken to Coastal Carolina Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival, according to the Jasper County Coroner’s Office. The crash happened around 2 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of Purrysburg Road and Old Charleston Highway, according to Lance Cpl. Brittany Glover of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Washington was driving the four-wheeler west on Purrysburg Road when he veered off the left side of the roadway and struck a ditch, the SCHP press release said.

Information on Washington’s funeral arrangements was not immediately available.
