Brazen bicycle bandit arrested for robbing Bluffton bank
A suspect has been taken into custody following the Wednesday afternoon bank robbery that led to a short-lived lockdown at USCB’s Bluffton campus, according to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials received reports of a bank robbery at TD Bank, located at 13 University Parkway in Bluffton, which is actually located within Jasper County lines near the Walmart and Publix stores.
Shortly after, USCB posted that their Bluffton campus was under lockdown and that students and faculty members should shelter in place.
On scene, witnesses described the suspect as a Black man who fled on a bicycle. Detectives later determined that the suspect did flee on a bicycle, but left it in a wooded area nearby before driving away in a small, white SUV.
A few hours later, the suspect’s vehicle was found in the Charleston area. Officers with the North Charleston Police Department conducted a traffic stop and took the suspect into custody. Details remain unclear about how much money was stolen and the specifics of the crime.
Just before 8 p.m. Wednesday, the suspect was booked into the Al Cannon Detention Center in Charleston, according to jail records. The suspect will be transported back to Jasper County, according to officials.
The suspect was identified as a man from Summerville. So far, the suspect has not been charged with a crime in Jasper County. The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette will name the suspect if and when he is charged with a crime.
The investigation is ongoing, according to officials. The number of agencies involved is a long list, including USCB campus police, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, Hardeeville Police Department, FBI, SLED, SCDNR, North Charleston Police Department and the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office were all involved in the Wednesday afternoon search and arrest.
