A Beaufort man was charged with felony assault and battery of an aggravated nature Tuesday morning after a St. Helena Island family found a man beaten and disfigured.

Barron Kashawn Brown Lights turned himself in on these charges the morning of July 15. The victim was a man found in the Olde Church area of St. Helena by a nearby family around 1 a.m. July 2. Lights reportedly had been looking for the victim beforehand, according to Lt. Danny Allen, spokesperson for Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

Officers reported finding the victim with swollen eyes, mouth and part of his right ear detached. He was able to speak but was transported to the hospital from the scene.

Assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature is the highest assault charge in South Carolina and is punishable up to 20 years in prison.

Lights also had two other charges but they were unrelated to the assault. For all three, he was given $60k bond, but has not posted bail as of this morning.
