Morning gunfire rips into Burton home, sends man to hospital in critical condition

Beaufort County deputies are investigating after a spurt of gunfire ripped inside a Burton mobile home early Wednesday morning and severely injured a man inside.

Police responded to the reported shooting around 1:45 a.m. in the 100 block of Shanklin Road, which runs between S.C. 116 (Laurel Bay Road) and U.S. 21 (Trask Parkway) west of the Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort.

Inside the home, they found a 32-year-old man “suffering from multiple gunshot wounds” and in critical condition, according to a Wednesday morning alert from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

Emergency crews took the man to Charleston’s Medical University of South Carolina, according to Lt. Daniel Allen of the BCSO. His condition was unknown as of 11 a.m. Wednesday.

An initial investigation indicated the gunshots were fired from outside the home, which is a single-wide trailer set back about 50 feet from the roadway. Deputies found no other people inside the residence, Allen said.

As of Wednesday morning, investigators had not classified the incident as a drive-by shooting. Deputies were checking nearby cameras and license plate readers for potential suspects, Allen said, but options were limited due to the rural area in Burton where the attack occurred.

Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to call Sgt. Lidey at 843-255-3294. Tips can be submitted anonymously through the Crime Stoppers of Beaufort County tip service, through the P3 Tips mobile app or by dialing 844-TIPS-BFT (844-847-7238).
