A car collision Thursday afternoon brought major traffic slowdowns on a five-mile stretch of I-95 near Hardeeville.
The crash happened around 1:30 p.m. near the 8-mile marker of I-95, according to an alert from the City of Hardeeville. Officials asked drivers to avoid the area on both directions of the interstate.
Beginning near Exit 5 to U.S. 17 and stretching north to Exit 8 to Hilton Head Island, average speeds on northbound I-95 had dropped to around 15 mph as of 1:55 p.m., according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation.

Thursday’s crash came as the Beaufort County area started seeing its usual influx of traffic ahead of the July 4th weekend, especially along the I-95 corridor. The holiday was expected to bring a record-breaking number of visitors to Hilton Head.
