GA man killed in crash with pickup truck while leaving Hardeeville area

A 61-year-old driver from Georgia was killed Sunday afternoon after his muscle car collided “head-on” with a pickup truck in southern Jasper County, officials said.

Mark Lang, of Stone Mountain, was pronounced dead at the scene following the crash around 3 p.m. Sunday, according to the Jasper County Coroner’s Office.

Lang was the only occupant of his 2012 Ford Mustang as he drove south on U.S. 17 (Speedway Boulevard) away from the Hardeeville area. Near the highway’s intersection with Telfair Plantation Drive — about 3 miles from the Georgia border — he struck a 2016 Ford F-150 “head-on” as the truck drove in the opposite direction, according to Master Trooper William H. Bennett of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The driver of the F-150 was taken to the Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah for treatment of his injuries, according to the SCHP release.

Sunday’s fatal collision was being investigated by Jasper County coroner’s staff and the SCHP.

Eighteen people were killed in traffic accidents across Jasper County last year, with fatal incidents primarily centered around Hardeeville’s I-95 junction or remote highways with little to no streetlight coverage.
