Beaufort County police investigate ‘skeletal remains’ found behind home

Beaufort County deputies are investigating after “unidentified skeletal remains” were found Sunday evening behind an unoccupied residence on St. Helena Island.

The remains were reported to police around 5 p.m. Sunday in the area of Sea Island Parkway (U.S. 21), which runs east-west through the entirety of St. Helena. The circumstances surrounding the case remained under investigation as of Monday morning, according to the Monday afternoon release from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

Reached by phone Monday morning, Lt. Daniel Allen of the BCSO said it was “too early to tell” if the discovery was connected to a previous case or an incidence of foul play.

The remains would be analyzed at the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office before being sent to a local anthropologist for additional study, according to Chief Deputy Coroner Shane Bowers.

Anyone with information about this case is encouraged to contact the sheriff’s office non-emergency dispatch line at 843-524-2777. Tips can also be reported anonymously through Crime Stoppers of Beaufort County, via the P3 Tips App or by calling 844-847-7238 (844-TIPS-BFT).
