2 killed in boating accident near Hilton Head’s Skull Creek, officials say

A late Friday night boat crash in the waters off Hilton Head Island killed two people and sent two others to the hospital, officials said.

Emergency personnel received reports of the crash around 9:45 p.m. in the waters of Skull Creek, which runs between Pinckney Island and northwest Hilton Head. Two of the vessel’s four occupants were “found dead at the scene.”

The remaining two passengers were brought to the dock at Skull Creek Boathouse, where they were transported to Hilton Head Medical Center, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office incident report.

The Beaufort County Coroner’s Office had not yet released the names of the deceased.

First responders at the crash site Friday night included BCSO water rescue teams, crews with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Coast Guard.

SCDNR was investigating the circumstances of the crash.

“I’m at a loss for words over the tragic boat accident last night,” Hilton Head Island Mayor Alan Perry wrote in a social media post Saturday afternoon. “My heart and prayers are with the families of the deceased and those who are injured. May God’s hand provide comfort during these trying times.”
