10-year-old bicyclist killed in crash with pickup truck in Bluffton neighborhood

A 10-year-old bicyclist was killed Saturday afternoon in a collision with a pickup truck in a Bluffton-area neighborhood between Buckwalter Place and U.S. 278, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Adam Meissner was riding his bike around 2:55 p.m. Saturday in the Reserve at Woodbridge condo complex when he was struck by a 2016 Ram pickup truck. The child was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a SCHP media release.

The driver of the Ram stayed at the scene as law enforcement arrived, according to Trooper Nick Pye of the SCHP. No criminal charges had been filed in connection with the crash, which happened near 50 Pebble Beach Road within the gated community in unincorporated Beaufort County.

Adam was a fourth grader at River Ridge Academy, a public school for students from preschool to eighth grade.

Principal Brian Ryman wrote in a somber email to parents that Adam would be remembered as “smart, funny, energetic and athletic.”

The school would provide “additional counselors” for students and staff “to help them cope with this tragedy,” the email read.

“Adam was a shining light in the lives of all who knew him — smart, funny, energetic and athletic,” read a GoFundMe organized for the child’s family by Bluffton resident Tiffany Washington. “His vibrant personality touched the hearts of his classmates, teachers, friends and family leaving behind memories that will be cherished forever.”
