Suspect nabbed after Hilton Head man shot 6 times inside Shelter Cove apartment, police say
Police arrested a 20-year-old Hilton Head Island resident as the suspected sole gunman in an early December shooting inside a Shelter Cove apartment. The sudden gunfire sent one man to the hospital with a half-dozen bullet wounds and narrowly missed a second person in the unit, investigators say.
Sacario Jahaud Ferebee was charged Wednesday night with two counts of attempted murder, first-degree burglary and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, according to Beaufort County jail records.
Beaufort County deputies responded around 7:15 p.m. Dec. 1 to an apartment complex on Harbourside Lane, where the mother of the gunshot victim led police to the correct unit. Inside, police found a trail of blood on a spiral staircase and a man on the floor “screaming in pain,” according to a sheriff’s office incident report.
The man had six gunshot wounds to his hip, knees and legs, the report says. He told officers he had been walking down the spiral staircase in his apartment when he heard a knock at the door. An “unknown individual” walked into the unit and opened fire, he said.
Officers controlled the man’s bleeding before first responders took him to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah for treatment.
Deputies arrested Ferebee after interviewing multiple witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage from the area, according to sheriff’s office spokesperson Master Sgt. Danny Allen. He said Ferebee was charged with two counts of attempted murder because his spray of bullets “whizzed by” the mother of the victim, who was also inside the apartment at the time.
Investigators believe the shooting was not a random act of violence and that Ferebee and the gunshot victim knew each other, Allen said, although the motive for the attack was “still part of the investigation.”
Ferebee was previously arrested for attempted murder and unlawful handgun possession in July 2021, when he was 17 years old. The charges were pending in Beaufort County court as of Thursday.
As of Thursday afternoon, Ferebee remained in custody at the Beaufort County Detention Center.
