1 person killed in Hilton Head Island house fire Tuesday night, officials say
State authorities are investigating a Tuesday night house fire on north-end Hilton Head Island that killed one person and a dog inside. The deceased had not been named as of Wednesday evening.
Crews from Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue responded to a neighbor’s call from Victoria Square Drive around 10:35 p.m. to find the three-story home fully engulfed in flames.
The home’s only occupant, a relative of the homeowner, was found dead inside the home along with a dog, according to Deputy Fire Chief Joheida Fister. One of the homeowner’s dogs managed to escape and was found outside.
Firefighters had fully extinguished the blaze by 2:15 a.m. Wednesday, Fister said. Its leaping flames blackened the sides of two neighboring homes, but both were deemed safe to live in after inspection.
Charred portions of the house remained standing after the flames were out. It is one of 95 “Charleston style homes” in the Victoria Square gated community, located off Marshland Road.
The victim remained unidentified as the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office attempted to reach their next of kin, according to Deputy Coroner Shane Bowers.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation by HHIFR, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office and state agents at the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, which assists in all cases of fatal fires.
