Bicyclist struck and killed on Fording Island Road near Bluffton Home Depot store

A bicyclist was struck by a car and killed while trying to cross U.S. 278 Friday night at the intersection of Gateway Village and Fording Island roads near the Home Depot store.

The fatal collision happened around 8:32 p.m. when the cyclist collided with a 2019 Honda Accord traveling west on the highway. The victim died at the scene, according to Lance Cpl. Brittany Glover of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Beaufort County sheriff’s deputies closed both westbound lanes of Fording Island Road in the area of the collision for at least a half-hour Friday night.

The deceased was not named as of Monday morning because their next of kin had not yet been contacted about their death, according to Deputy Coroner Margaret Bowyer of the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office.
