An 8-year-old child, from Hardeeville, died this week while attempting to cross a highway on a motorized bicycle.

Two unnamed children were attempting to cross Whyte Hardee Blvd, highway 17, around 11:43 am Tuesday on motorized bikes when one struck a tractor-trailer, Hardeeville Police Chief Sam Woodward said. The accident happened between the NAPA auto parts and Butler’s Service Center. The speed limit there is 45 mph.

The child was pronounced dead from their injuries, according to Jasper County Coroner Willie P. Aiken.

The Hardeeville Police Department is investigating the incident. Because the investigation is still ongoing, Woodward was not able to comment on who might have been at fault for the accident.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
