Verizon customers across Beaufort County may experience “intermittent” 911 outages as the carrier addresses system difficulties in the area. A separate but similar issue affected Jasper County beginning Monday evening but had been fixed as of early Tuesday morning.

Those in Beaufort County experiencing an emergency are advised to try 911 first but if unable to connect can call the county’s non-emergency dispatch line at 843-524-2777, according to sheriff’s office spokesperson Maj. Angela Viens. She added that the agency was in contact with Verizon and the area’s routing provider INdigital, but an estimated time for a solution had not been provided.

Jasper County, which uses a different receiving system, began experiencing problems with its 911 service for all major cell carriers after a fiber optic cable was cut near Ravenel, S.C., part of Charleston County. Repair crews fixed the issue around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, according personnel from the county’s emergency services division.

This report will be updated as more information becomes available.
