Body of missing Sun City man found two hours away from home on remote country road
Nearly a month after his disappearance, the body of 81-year-old Sun City resident Martin Raffone was found in Lee County, S.C. on Saturday, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.
A concerned resident had found Raffone’s white Hyundai Genesis on a “remote dirt road” in Lynchburg and notified local police, who found the man’s body near the car. Lynchburg is a small town of about 500 people located near I-95 and 20 minutes northeast of Sumter. The location where the vehicle was found was two hours and fifteen minutes north of Raffone’s home in Sun City.
Raffone, who had been diagnosed with dementia, drove away unexpectedly from his Sun City home in the early morning hours of Feb. 20. He was spotted multiple times by surveillance cameras that morning, including inside an Enmarket gas station to purchase $10 in fuel, but no other sightings were reported after the morning he went missing.
The circumstances of Raffone’s death are under investigation by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.
This report will be updated as more information becomes available.
