Bluffton police received a report of gunfire in the area of Fuller Court around 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, according to an alert sent from the department. The short street branches off Simmonsville Road and is home to New Hope Village, a Habitat for Humanity community in the town limits.

The reported shots appeared to be an “isolated incident,” said spokesperson Sgt. Bonifacio Perez, and there was no apparent threat to the public. He could not offer any additional information as of 2:20 p.m. Wednesday, but advised residents to avoid the area as police respond.

Bluffton Middle School, located off Simmonsville Road about a mile from the reported gunfire, was placed on modified lockdown at 1:55 p.m. Wednesday in response to the incident, school district spokesperson Candace Bruder told The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette. The lockdown was lifted around 3:10 p.m., she said.

The Bluffton Police Department, Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office and county EMS crews were on the scene.

This report will be updated as more information becomes available.
