A Pineland man died Wednesday in a single-vehicle collision. Harvey Garvin, 61, was driving North on Highway 601 in Pineland at around 8:30 p.m. when his 2002 Chevrolet Silverado swerved off the pavement and into a ditch.

Garvin, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision, according to Jasper County Coroner Willie P. Aiken. This is third time this week of a motor vehicle fatality in Jasper County where a seat belt was not in use.

An autopsy for Garvin has been scheduled for Saturday at the Medical University of South Carolina, in Charleston.

The Jasper County Coroner’s Office along with South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the death.
