A small brush fire broke out near Beach Field Lane on Daufuskie Island around 7:15 Wednesday morning.

The fire began as stumps and other debris were being burned. From there, the combination of a windy morning and dry conditions resulted in the fire growing out of control, according to Chief Shane Comparetto of the Daufuskie Island Fire District.

Local residents and visitors likely will see lingering smoke.

“It’ll be smoldering for a couple of days just because it’s so thick undergrowth,” Comparetto said. “The ground is just so dry.”

Firefighters had the fire under control by around 9:30 a.m. No injuries or damage to property was reported.
