A Pineland woman died from injuries sustained in a vehicle crash near Ridgeland Thursday evening.

Salita Patterson, 35, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred at 6:47 p.m. two miles west of Ridgeland, Jasper County Coroner Willie P. Aiken said.

Patterson was driving a Lincoln MKZ west on Highway 278 near Heritage Drive when she improperly changed lanes and sideswiped a Dodge Ram pickup truck, which caused her to lose control, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said. Her vehicle left the roadway and struck a ditch and tree before overturning.

A passenger in Patterson’s vehicle was taken to the Savannah Memorial Health Hospital and treated for injuries, Aiken said. The driver of the Dodge Ram was not injured.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol and Jasper County Coroner’s Office are investigating.
