A 30-year-old Hilton Head man was found shot to death Thursday evening along a mid-island road, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies received a call about a reckless driver on Marshland Road around 5:50 p.m. Thursday, shortly followed by a report of gunfire from the nearby Allen Road. The 30-year-old Allen Road resident was found dead on the roadside, accompanied by an injured dog that appeared to also have been shot.

The dog, believed to belong to the gunshot victim, was taken to Port Royal Veterinary Clinic for treatment and likely will survive its injuries, according to Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Maj. Angela Viens.

No suspects had been identified as of 11 a.m. Thursday. Police were on the scene until about 1 a.m. Friday morning collecting evidence and searching for potential witnesses, according to Viens.

Investigators believe the reckless driving call and subsequent shooting are related incidents, although Viens would not say if the gunfire was believed to be part of a drive-by shooting.

Anyone with information related to this incident may contact Sgt. Cushman at 843-255-3722 or the anonymous Crime Stoppers of the Lowcountry tip line at 843-554-1111.
