Car plows into Jasper County apartment complex, building deemed unsafe for residents
One person was injured and a first-story facade required repairs after a car crashed into the front of a Jasper County apartment complex Monday morning, according to Jasper County Fire-Rescue.
Firefighters arrived around 9 a.m. to The Palmer apartments, located off Argent Boulevard, to find the blue Honda SUV halfway through a screened porch of the three-story apartment building. The driver had minor injuries but was not hospitalized, Bluffton Today reported.
First responders determined the collision had left that part of the building “structurally compromised” and began restoration efforts with help from the South Carolina Emergency Response Task Force, along with Hilton Head and Bluffton fire crews. The American Red Cross was working to provide temporary housing to 12 residents whose homes would need to be temporarily evacuated, fire officials said.
The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the crash, but details on its cause were not immediately available.
Jasper County Fire Rescue Chief Russell Wells said 10 people were inside the building at the time of the collision. No other injuries were reported.
A spokesperson from the department could not be reached Tuesday afternoon to answer additional questions, including whether repairs at the building had been finished.
