Port Royal police sergeant charged with driving under the influence Tuesday night
Sgt. Jason Boggess, an investigator with the Port Royal Police Department, was arrested and charged with DUI late Tuesday night.
Boggess, a 37-year-old resident of Lady’s Island, was booked in the Beaufort County Detention Center just before 11:30 p.m. Tuesday and released Wednesday morning on a $1,017 personal recognizance bond. His charge specifies that his blood alcohol content was less than .10 and that this was his first DUI offense, according to public records. Under South Carolina law, drivers with a BAC over 0.08 are considered to be under the influence.
A trooper from the S.C. Highway Patrol made the arrest. An SCHP spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
“We can confirm that Sgt. Jason Boggess was arrested by the S.C. Highway Patrol last evening ... and the incident is being reviewed internally,” the Port Royal department spokesperson Capt. John Griffith wrote in a statement to The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette Wednesday afternoon. “The Port Royal Police Department cannot comment on personnel matters that are under review.”
Boggess was recognized by the S.C. Department of Public Safety as an “officer of the year” for DUI enforcement in 2018, making 19 DUI arrests throughout the year.
