One homicide victim from Beaufort County ID’d, another was 16 and name is pending

One of the two Battery Creek High School students who died in Jasper County has been identified as Jorge Lopez, 18, of Beaufort.

Lopez and another male student, a 16-year-old whose identity has not be released, were found dead on Etheridge Road, in Yemassee, Sunday. Both died from multiple gunshot injuries.

At around 5 p.m. Sunday, Lopez was driving the unidentified student and a female passenger, whose identity has also not been revealed, when shots were fired.

Lopez was taken to Coastal Carolina Hospital, but later died due to his injuries. The 16-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. The female passenger was also taken to an unknown hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the coroner said.

The two deaths are under investigation by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, which declined to comment further Monday afternoon. It’s common for SLED to investigate larger crimes like this when they happen in smaller counties.
