A burned vehicle containing human remains was found Saturday afternoon in the Burton community of northern Beaufort County, prompting an investigation for a “suspicious death,” according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies arrived around 4:20 p.m. near the intersection of Ramblin and Ramsey Roads in Burton, located about a half-mile north of the Walmart in Beaufort, finding a “severely burned car” about 50 yards into the woods with human remains inside.

The deceased person had not been identified as of noon Monday, according to the Monday release from the Sheriff’s Office. An autopsy is set for Monday afternoon to determine the cause and manner of death.

The incident is being investigated as a suspicious death and not necessarily as a murder, Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Maj. Angela Viens told The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette.

Viens said the car was not on fire when deputies arrived and appeared to have been parked in the woods for a few days or longer. She would not specify where in the vehicle the body was found.

The car was too burned for investigators to immediately determine its ownership, Viens said, but police will attempt to locate the car’s vehicle identification number to determine the owner in the coming days.

Anyone with information related to the burned vehicle or other suspicious activity near Burton’s Ramsey and Ramblin Roads is encouraged to call Sgt. J. Snider at 843-255-3421 or the anonymous Crime Stoppers of the Lowcountry tip line at 843-554-1111.
