91-year-old Hilton Head man killed after car veers into lagoon, Highway Patrol says

91-year-old Hilton Head resident Duane Twait was killed after his car veered into a roadside lagoon on the island’s north end Monday evening, according to the SC Highway Patrol.

Twait was driving south in a 2019 Mercedes sedan near the 40 block of Birdsong Way, located within the private gated community Hilton Head Plantation, when he ran off the right side of the road into the marsh around 7:10 p.m. Monday, according to Highway Patrol Spokesperson Lance Cpl. Nick Pye. No passengers were inside the vehicle.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon at the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office. Twait’s cause of death and time of death were not immediately available.
