A single-car crash in Beaufort early Tuesday morning left a downtown storefront with exterior cosmetic damage and two fewer palm trees, according to the City of Beaufort/Town of Port Royal Fire Department.

The driver was exiting the Woods Memorial Bridge onto Carteret Street just before 6:30 a.m. when their car lost control and veered to the left, toppling one of the sidewalk’s palm trees and swiping across the brick storefront of Tidal Creek Haven, a family-owned home and garden shop, before crashing into a second palm tree.

Firefighters cleared the debris and cut the damaged tree to prevent it from falling onto passerby, said spokesperson Ross Vezin. The driver was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.

Tidal Creek Haven is operating under normal hours Tuesday, said co-owner Courtney Tangalos, despite minor losses of landscaping equipment and a sizable scratch on the store’s facade. Tangalos, who runs the store with her mother, said she was grateful that injuries and damages seemed to be minor.

The cause of the accident was not immediately available, Vezin told The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette. The crash is under investigation by the Beaufort Police Department.

Tidal Creek Haven is still open for business following the early-morning collision, co-owner Courtney Tangalos told The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette. Located at the corner of Carteret and Bay in downtown Beaufort, the family-owned lifestyle shop sells handcrafted furniture and home goods.
