A man who was struck and killed by a train early Sunday morning in Jasper County was identified as a Hardeeville resident, the Jasper County Coroner’s Office announced Monday morning.

Ramiro Victorico Gonzalez Badillo, 42, was pronounced dead at the scene, Jasper County Coroner Willie P. Aiken III said. Aiken did not have an exact time of death.

Hardeeville Police Chief Sam Woodward said the train was traveling southbound about 1:30 a.m. Sunday when it struck the man. The investigation was ongoing, but police believe the death was accidental.

Investigators requested a toxicology report for Badillo, which had not been completed as of Monday afternoon, Aiken said. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.

Badillo is the second pedestrian killed this year by trains passing through Hardeeville.

In early April, 43-year-old Jason Brown of Hardeeville was found near the tracks about a mile south of where the tracks intersect with Main Street. Investigators believe Brown was struck and killed by a southbound CSX freight train, according to previous reporting from The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette.

Brown’s death came after a fatal accident at the Hardeeville railroad crossing in October 2022. Rose Black, 59, of Hardeeville, was killed by an incoming Amtrak train after traffic left her trapped on the tracks on the morning of Oct. 28, according to an Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette article.
