School placed on modified lockdown as Beaufort police investigate nearby assault

Beaufort Elementary School went under a brief modified lockdown Wednesday morning as police investigated a nearby assault, according to the Beaufort Police Department.

Law enforcement lifted the lockdown at 10:57 a.m, according to school district spokesperson Candace Bruder.

The alleged assault and battery occurred at 1800 Prince Street, according to an alert from Beaufort Police. The address corresponds to a soccer field just a few hundred feet northwest of Beaufort Elementary.

A spokesperson from the Beaufort Police Department could not immediately be reached for additional details on the assault.

“The district is thankful to our law enforcement partners for their commitment in keeping our schools safe,” Bruder said.
