2 found dead in Sun City residence Thursday night were husband and wife, coroner says

A husband and wife, whose bodies were found in a Sun City residence late Thursday, are believed to have been dead for 24 hours or more, according to officials from the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office and Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

Robert Caravello, 71, and Marcella Caravello, 69, of Bluffton, were found dead in their home Thursday night. Their time of death is thought to be sometime Wednesday, Beaufort County Coroner David Ott said. He would not say whether the two appeared to have died at the same time.

Deputies were called around 7:30 p.m. to a home in Sun City, an age-restricted planned community of about 10,000 residents in the Okatie area. The Caravellos were found dead in their home, according to Sgt. Danny Allen, a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office.

Allen would not provide a specific location for the incident within Sun City, which spans over 5,000 acres across Beaufort and Jasper counties.

However, a source who lives in the area told The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette the bodies were found at a home in the Stratford Village neighborhood, located in the southwest end of Sun City.

The Caravellos are listed as living on Sundance Lane in a gated community in Sun City, according to Beaufort County tax and property records.

At 3 p.m. Friday, there was no longer a police presence or police tape around the house, according to the source.

Allen said investigators believe the deaths to be an “isolated incident” that do not pose a threat to the public or surrounding area. He would not answer questions about a cause of death, including whether the case was a possible murder-suicide.

Autopsies for the Caravellos are scheduled for Monday at the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office, Ott said.

This investigation is ongoing, Allen said.
