Hardeeville man charged, 14-year-old in critical condition after weekend hit-and-run

A driver who allegedly hit and left a 14-year-old seriously injured on the side of a road in Hardeeville over the weekend turned himself in Tuesday, according to the Hardeeville Police Department.

Christopher Wright, 47, was charged Tuesday with hit-and-run resulting in great bodily injury, jail records show.

Wright was driving a pickup truck Saturday around 4:30 p.m. on Toomerville Loop Road when he allegedly hit a 14-year-old on a four-wheeler, said Chief Sam Woodward with the Hardeeville Police Department. As of Wednesday, the 14-year-old remained in critical condition.

Wright left the child injured on the side of the road, Woodward said, before turning himself in to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office three days later. The Hardeeville Police Department has enlisted the help of the South Carolina Multi-disciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) to help them evaluate “scrapes and paint” evidence from both vehicles, which have been impounded, Woodward said.
