Police name 2 who they say shot at, wounded man in December while driving in Port Royal

This story has been updated.

Police are looking for two people they believe are involved in a shooting that injured a 29-year-old man in Port Royal, the Port Royal Police Department announced Tuesday.

Jeffrey Keyontay Gadson, 27, of Pineland, South Carolina, and Neyauna Fields, 26, of Ridgeland, were identified as the driver and passenger involved in the Dec. 29 shooting, officials said in a press release. Gadson has a warrant out for his arrest for attempted murder and possession of a weapon in the commission of a violent crime, while Fields is wanted for accessory after the fact of a felony.

On Dec. 29, police were called to Beaufort Memorial Hospital around 4 p.m. after a man drove himself to the hospital with a gunshot wound, officials said in a Port Royal Police Department press release.

The Ridgeland man, who was not identified, told police he had been driving on Ribaut Road between Pinckney Boulevard and Midtown Drive during the shooting. The man told police he and another driver “became involved in an altercation.” The other driver pulled out a gun and shot at least once into the man’s car, hitting him on his side, police said in the press release.

Police believe the man knows the other driver and passenger who were identified Tuesday as Gadson and Fields. The car was described to police as being a dark gray or blue 2008 BMW 335I. The car had Georgia license plate number TEA2765.

The car Gadson and Fields were allegedly riding in was found Saturday by the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office and seized as part of the investigation.

Additional details were not immediately available.

Anyone with information regarding this incident may call Detective Sgt John Hogue or Detective Sgt Norman McCown with the Port Royal Police Department at 843-986-2220.

When we publish mugshots

The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette publishes police booking photos, or mugshots, in the following instances:

  • In situations where a public figure or someone in a position of public trust is arrested
  • In cases where there is an immediate and widespread threat to public safety
  • In cases where the arrested person is accused of a crime reporters have evidence to believe involved numerous, unknown victims

Reporters will avoid using mugshots as lead images for online articles in order to limit their circulation on social media, except in cases where the public is served by the immediate identification of the accused. Reporters and editors may use discretion in situations that don’t meet the criteria outlined in this policy but still present a compelling reason to publish a mugshot.
