A Beaufort man was killed after being struck by a vehicle in Beaufort County early Saturday, authorities said.

Robert McCoy, 59, of Beaufort, was pronounced dead shortly after the 6 a.m. collision, according to Beaufort County Coroner David Ott.

The crash occurred in the 3100 block of Trask Parkway, according to a Burton Fire District news release.

“Based on initial reports and findings upon arrival, it was determined that a pedestrian was struck by a motor vehicle and has sustained severe injuries not compatible with sustaining life,” the press release stated.

The Burton Fire District, Beaufort County EMS, Beaufort County Sheriff’s Department and South Carolina Highway Patrol all responded to the scene, the release said.

The area of Northbound Trask Parkway, toward Sheldon, was closed for over two hours following the crash as the scene was investigated and those involved were treated.

Authorities have not identified the victim or disclosed details about the vehicle involved or whether the driver will be charged in the collision.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
