Man, 26, charged in pair of shootings earlier this month in Burton area, cops say

A man who was wanted by police in connection with a pair of shootings earlier this month in a Burton neighborhood turned himself in Tuesday morning, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

Marquise Singleton, 26, of Beaufort, faces charges of aggravated breach of peace and discharging a firearm into a dwelling, jail records show.

The first of the two shootings took place on the morning of Dec. 4 on Possum Hill Road. Police again responded to reports of a shooting in the neighborhood, located down the road from Battery Creek High School, just two nights later on Dec. 6. When police were called out for the second shooting, they found one home had been hit by gunfire, according to previous reporting from the Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette.

No injuries were reported in either incident.

Singleton turned himself in to the sheriff’s office law enforcement center in Beaufort around 6 a.m. Tuesday, said Maj. Angela Viens, a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson. He faces charges for the Dec. 6 shooting. Both incidents remain under investigation.

Police told reporters they believed Singleton may be targeting someone living in the area. Investigators were unsure of who that person is, Viens said.

If anyone has any information regarding this incident, they may call Cpl. Adam Kremer with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office at 843-255-3294, or the anonymous Crime Stoppers of the Lowcountry tip line at 843-554-1111.

When we publish mugshots

The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette publishes police booking photos, or mugshots, in the following instances:

  • In situations where a public figure or someone in a position of public trust is arrested
  • In cases where there is an immediate and widespread threat to public safety
  • In cases where the arrested person is accused of a crime reporters have evidence to believe involved numerous, unknown victims

Reporters will avoid using mugshots as lead images for online articles in order to limit their circulation on social media, except in cases where the public is served by the immediate identification of the accused. Reporters and editors may use discretion in situations that don’t meet the criteria outlined in this policy but still present a compelling reason to publish a mugshot.
