Beaufort man charged with attempted kidnapping, police searching for second suspect

A Beaufort man faces multiple felony charges as deputies from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office continue to search for the other suspect believed to be involved in a violent kidnapping attempt.

Jayron Sneed, 28, was charged Wednesday with attempted kidnapping and assault and battery by mob, jail records show. Attempted kidnapping is considered a felony and carries the same punishment as kidnapping, according to South Carolina’s Code of Laws.

Marquise Rayshawn Singleton, 26, of Beaufort, who police believe to be the second suspect involved in the kidnapping attempt, has not yet been located, according to Maj. Angela Viens, a spokesperson for the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident occurred the evening of Sept. 16 as the victim stood outside of his home in Beaufort. Sneed and Singleton allegedly approached the residence and assaulted the man with the intent of kidnapping him, Viens said. The victim received injuries to his head and eyes but was able to get away.

Sneed was in custody at the Beaufort County Detention Center. A bond hearing has not yet been held.

Anyone with information about this incident or the whereabouts of Singleton is encouraged to call the Crime Stoppers of the Lowcountry anonymous tip line at 843-554-1111.

When we publish mugshots

The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette publishes police booking photos, or mugshots, in the following instances:

  • In situations where a public figure or someone in a position of public trust is arrested
  • In cases where there is an immediate and widespread threat to public safety
  • In cases where the arrested person is accused of a crime reporters have evidence to believe involved numerous, unknown victims

Reporters will avoid using mugshots as lead images for online articles in order to limit their circulation on social media, except in cases where the public is served by the immediate identification of the accused. Reporters and editors may use discretion in situations that don’t meet the criteria outlined in this policy but still present a compelling reason to publish a mugshot.
