‘Suspicious’ Beaufort County fire under investigation, officials say

A Beaufort County house fire is being investigated by Burton Fire District investigators after it was deemed suspicious.

The fire took place around 11:30 p.m. Friday. Emergency crews, from the Burton Fire District, Beaufort County EMS and the Marine Corps Air Station Fire Department responded and found a single-story home in Burton’s Pinewood District with heavy fire in the back of the building, according to a news release.

“No one was home at the time and no injuries were reported,” the release read. “While the fire remains under investigation, Burton Fire District fire investigators have determined the fire to be suspicious. Anyone with any information is encouraged to contact the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.”

This was the second house fire of the week in Burton, according to the release.

Residents are urged to stay aware of fire danger through the fall and winter, the most dangerous time of the year for fires in South Carolina.
