Critter Management taxes weren’t paid, state claims. Maffo family member is charged

A Bluffton woman was arrested Thursday and charged with six counts of failing to pay the state taxes her company withheld from employees’ paychecks, according to a news release from the S.C. Department of Revenue.

Dana Marie Maffo, 54, was responsible for collecting, reporting and paying state withholding tax on behalf of Critter Management of Hilton Head, an animal control and wildlife management company known in Beaufort County for dealing with nuisance alligators.

According to arrest warrants, $56,275 in taxes were withheld from employees from 2014 to 2019, but Maffo failed to pay $42,294 to the state.

If convicted, Maffo faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison or a fine of up to $10,000 per count, or both, plus court costs.

On Thursday afternoon, she was listed as an inmate in the Beaufort County Detention Center pending a bond hearing.

When we publish mugshots

The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette publishes police booking photos, or mugshots, in the following instances:

  • In situations where a public figure or someone in a position of public trust is arrested
  • In cases where there is an immediate and widespread threat to public safety
  • In cases where the arrested person is accused of a crime reporters have evidence to believe involved numerous, unknown victims

Reporters will avoid using mugshots as lead images for online articles in order to limit their circulation on social media, except in cases where the public is served by the immediate identification of the accused. Reporters and editors may use discretion in situations that don’t meet the criteria outlined in this policy but still present a compelling reason to publish a mugshot.
