The 911 emergency phone line — which was temporarily disrupted for some Beaufort County residents — was restored and is working as normal, according to an alert from the Sheriff’s Office Friday afternoon.

Around 12:30 a.m. Friday, a message went out to alert those in the 29902 ZIP code that calls for 911 service may be disrupted, according to Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office. The 29902 area code encompasses about 16,000 people.

“A fiber-optic cable, which was damaged yesterday during a construction project on Lady’s Island, caused possible overnight disruptions,” the first alert said. A special line was issued.

Maj. Bob Bromage, sheriff’s office spokesperson, said around 10 a.m. Friday said at that time there had been no problems due to the service disruption.

The cable has been fully repaired and residents in the city of Beaufort should have no issues reaching 911, the latest alert said.
