Man charged with attempted murder after drive-by shooting Sunday in Beaufort

A Beaufort man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following a drive-by shooting in an area where there’s been several shootings in recent months.

Gecoby Daise, 19, of 1715 Prince St., was a passenger of a vehicle when he fired at a person standing in his yard in the 1300 block of Duke Street just after 11 a.m. Sunday, according to Beaufort police.

The person who was shot at was not struck by the gunfire, said Deputy Chief Darrell Gruel of the Beaufort Police Department.

The vehicle in which Daise was a passenger was later spotted by a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office deputy on Lady’s Island. A short pursuit followed, but the vehicle got away when it went over the McTeer Bridge, police said. Port Royal police then came across the vehicle crashed into a tree, and authorities received reports of a person walking through backyards, carrying a rifle. Police found Daise hiding in the bushes and said he was the one who shot at the person in Beaufort.

Daise is in jail awaiting a bond hearing.

Earlier this year, a spate of shooting incidents in downtown Beaufort neighborhoods prompted complaints from residents and a meeting with police in March. At that time, Police Chief Dale McDorman said that a “core group of people who all know each other” were targeting each other in the shootings.
