Threat on social media about Hunting Island unsubstantiated, says Beaufort County alert

Beaufort County sheriff’s deputies are patrolling Hunting Island on Memorial Day after threats of violence began circulating on social media.

“We’ve not been able to substantiate anything,” said Maj. Bob Bromage, spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office.

Still, he said, the department has to address issues when they arise.

He would not elaborate about the timing or the nature of the threat, citing the ongoing investigation into the source.

Bromage said there does not appear to be any threat to beach-goers or visitors at the state park.

“There’s no reason to change their plans” for celebrating the holiday, Bromage said.

Anyone who sees suspicious activity may call 911. Anyone with information on the threat may call 911 or Crime Stoppers of the Lowcountry at 843-554-1111.
